Costa Rica is located in Central America, bordering both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It was one of several Central American countries that declared its independence from Spain in 1821 along with Mexico. Costa Rica’s climate is tropical and subtropical, with a rainy season and a dry season. Costa Rica experiences occasional earthquakes, hurricanes along the Caribbean coast, frequent flooding of lowlands during the beginning of rainy season, and landslides. It also has several active volcanoes. Costa Rica’s economy is mostly driven by agriculture, but it also has experienced growth in technology, manufacturing, and tourism. The economy has mostly been stable; however, the government struggles with a large deficit and massive internal debt.
The Church of God has been long established in Costa Rica, and its Children of Promise program, called Niños de Promesa, began in 2004. Niños de Promesa currently serves children in eight churches in Costa Rica. Basic necessities have become more expensive for families in Costa Rica. The cost of nutritious food has gone up, and children’s diets have become less balanced and healthy. It also has become difficult for families to pay rising school fees. Niños de Promesa director Bany Aguilar works with the local committees in each congregation to help sponsored children receive the food, education, and health care they need. They also make sure the children are discipled and experience the love of Jesus in the community of the church.
Your sponsorship helps bring nutrition, education, health care, discipleship, and wholeness to a child in Costa Rica.
