The Dominican Republic, located in the Caribbean Sea, was the site of the first Spanish colony in the New World. It shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. The Dominican Republic is on the eastern 2/3 of the island, and Haiti makes up the rest of the island. The terrain is very mountainous, and the climate is tropical, with warm and humid weather all year long. The country’s location puts it in the hurricane belt, and it is at risk for severe storms from June through October. The economy of the Dominican Republic primarily depends upon agriculture, trade, and tourism. Exports include textiles, electronic products, jewelry, tobacco, and pharmaceuticals, as well as cacao, sugar, and coffee. Free primary school is available for everyone, but many children fail to complete their early education. This is often because they have to begin working to help supplement their family’s income.

The Niños de Promesa ministry began in The Dominican Republic in 2012. The children served through Niños de Promesa live in the communities of Guandules and Haras Nacionales. People in these communities live in extreme poverty. The communities are extremely crowded, with whole families living in one-room shanties that share walls with other shanties. Many children are unable to attend school. A lack of nutritious food and the crowded living conditions also cause health issues for children. Niños de Promesa partners with local Church of God congregations and volunteers to help sponsored children receive food, education, and health care. They also make sure the children are discipled and experience the love of Jesus in the community of their local church.

Your sponsorship helps bring nutrition, education, health care, discipleship, and wholeness to a child in the Dominican Republic.
