The Republic of Ecuador is located on the western coast of South America. The Galápagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean are also part of Ecuador. Ecuador gained its independence from Spain in 1820 as part of Gran Colombia, and then in 1830, it separated from Gran Colombia to become an independent country. The terrain of Ecuador has distinct regions: the Amazon jungle in the east, the high Andean Sierra in the center, and coastal plains on the Pacific Coast in the west. The climate in Ecuador depends on altitude and location. Temperatures are cool in the Andean highlands, while the coastal areas and the Amazon jungle are hot and humid. Ecuador is the world’s largest exporter of bananas. Over the years, Ecuador has had instability in the government and the economy, and many families find it difficult to earn enough to provide for their needs.

The Children of Promise ministry in Ecuador, called Niños de Promesa, began in 1995. It has since grown to include sponsored children in 12 churches across Ecuador – in the Andes and in urban and rural areas. Irma Rea, the director of Niños de Promesa, works with committees in the churches to make sure sponsored children are able to eat regularly, attend school, have access to health care, and are discipled in the loving communities of their local churches.
