Egypt is one of the world’s oldest countries with its Nile Valley considered to be “The Cradle of Civilization.” Its origins as a country trace back to the unification of the kingdoms of Upper and Lower Egypt c. 3150 BC. With a history of pyramids, monuments, and pharaohs, it also had some of the earliest advancements in writing, art, agriculture, organized religion, and the development of cities. The Egyptian people take great pride in their history, and it is a major part of their national identity. Egypt has the highest population in North Africa and the Middle East with a majority of the people living along the Nile River, since it is the only land that can be farmed. Most of Egypt’s territory is part of the Sahara Desert. About half of Egyptians live in densely populated urban areas, including the cities of Cairo and Alexandria. Recent unrest and violence in Egypt that began with the Egyptian revolution of 2011 has made life more difficult and dangerous for people throughout the country. 

In Egypt, Children of Promise operates under the name Hope of Egypt. For many years, Hope of Egypt has run the New Hope Day Care project in Cairo. The day care provides a safe, Christian environment for children in need while their parents work. In 2004, Hope of Egypt expanded its ministry to include sponsorships for children in Church of God congregations in Egypt. Children are discipled in the loving communities of their local churches and also receive food, access to education, and health care, that their families would otherwise struggle to provide.
