The Republic of Kenya is located in East Africa and gained its independence from Great Britain in 1963. The country gets its name from Mount Kenya, a well-known landmark and the second highest mountain peak in Africa. Kenya is also known for its numerous wildlife reserves that cover hundreds of thousands of square miles and contain thousands of animal species. The people of Kenya represent many different peoples and cultures, and many languages are spoken in addition to the country’s official languages of English and Swahili. 

In 2011 the Children of Promise program was founded in Kenya and began sponsoring children in the Mt. Elgon area near the far western border. This area has suffered intense violence and poverty caused by tribal conflicts and has many orphaned children. The sponsored children in the Mt. Elgon area were experiencing malnutrition and sickness and were unable to attend school. The area also suffered an outbreak of typhoid fever in 2012 that hospitalized some of the sponsored children. The Children of Promise Emergency Fund was able to help with the hospital bills to make sure the children received the medical care they needed to get well. Kenya’s Children of Promise Program Director, Rev. Ronald Chenimo, works with the Church of God congregations in Cheptais to help the sponsored children receive food, education, and health care as well the opportunity to experience the love of Jesus and be discipled in the community of the church.
