The Republic of Malawi, is a landlocked country in southeast Africa. Malawi was formerly known as Nyasaland, and it gained its independence from Great Britain in 1964. The centrally located city of Lilongwe became Malawi’s capital in 1974, and Blantyre, the largest city, is the country’s commercial capital. Lake Malawi, also called Lake Nyasa, the country’s most well-known natural feature, makes up more than three quarters of Malawi’s eastern boundary. Malawi is one of the world’s most densely populated and least developed countries. The economy is built on agriculture, and most Malawians live in rural areas. Population growth, increased pressure on agricultural lands, and the effects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic present significant challenges in Malawi. 

The Children of Promise program in Malawi began in 2009. Leaders in the Malawi Church of God saw many children and families in need, especially those who had been impacted by AIDS. Some families in the church were helping to raise multiple children who were orphaned as a result of the disease. The first sponsored children were from the community of Mtuwa, and in 2011, the program expanded to also include children in Mulanje. Rev. Emmanuel Masamba, an educator and pastor, directs the Children of Promise ministry in Malawi. As the children’s basic needs are met and they are connected to loving communities in their local churches, he and the leaders of the churches are seeing transformation and hope grow in the lives of the sponsored children
