Myanmar (Burma) in Southeast Asia has known little peace since the Japanese invasion in 1942 during World War II. Myanmar gained its independence from Great Britain in 1947. Decades of military rule have brought violence and economic hardship to the country. When the military regime refused to hand over power after its defeat in the election of 1990, the result was widespread repression of the people, and democracy leaders were arrested, exiled, or killed. In 2015, Myanmar held its first openly contested election since 1990 and in 2016 elected its first non-military president since the military coup of 1962. Despite having a wealth of natural resources, Myanmar is one of the world’s poorest countries. Buddhism is no longer the state religion of Myanmar, but it still has a great influence in governmental affairs. Muslims and Christians face religious persecution. 

Myitta, the Children of Promise Program in Myanmar, began in 1995. It currently serves sponsored children in seven communities in Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon (Rangoon). Dorothy Colney, national leader of the Church of God in Myanmar, also serves as Myitta director. Rev. Shelly Win, assistant director of Myitta, works with Dorothy and countless local volunteers to bring hope and wholeness to the sponsored children in Myanmar. The children and their families are discipled in the loving community of the church and the children receive food, educational opportunities, clothing, and medical care when needed.
