Peru, located in South America, was home to several ancient cultures, including the Inca Empire, before the Spanish Empire conquered and colonized the region in the 16th century. Peru became fully independent from Spain in 1824. Peru has three distinct zones: the dry coastal plain in the west (where most of the cities and industrial areas are located), the high Andean plateau running through the center (which is more agricultural), and the Amazon jungles in the east. During the 1990s, a guerilla insurgency in the country, along with high inflation, caused widespread poverty in Peru. Peru’s economic situation has become more stable since, but a large number of people still struggle to make enough to meet their basic needs.
The Children of Promise ministry in Peru, called Niños de Promesa, began in 1996. Niños de Promesa ministers to children in four locations: Chepén, Martha Chávez, Chiclayo, and Jaén. Most families in these communities live in one- or two-room adobe houses without running water. Telvi Espinoza, Niños de Promesa director, works with the committees in each local congregation to help sponsored children receive food, education, and health care. They also make sure the children are discipled and experience the love of Jesus in the community of the church.
