Tanzania, located on the east central coast of Africa, gained its independence from Great Britain in 1961. Tanzania has a rainy season from late November to early May, with the length of the rainy season varying in different parts of the country. It is also common for Tanzania to experience drought one year and floods the next. Many families in Tanzania are farmers. However, the climate makes agriculture challenging, and many families raise just enough to survive. Tanzania is also known for its wide variety of wildlife that includes antelope, lions, leopards, zebras, elephants, giraffes, monkeys, hippos, and crocodiles, among other species.

The Children of Promise sponsorship program in Tanzania began in 1995. It is known as Safina, the Swahili word referring to the reed basket into which Moses was placed by his mother. Education is a high priority in the Safina program, and a number of current church leaders and pastors in Tanzania received their secondary education through the Safina program. Most of the children in Safina attend schools in small villages and towns. Many towns and villages do not have secondary schools, so older students attend boarding schools during the week. About 100 of the sponsored children attend Aldersgate Education Center, a private Church of God school in Babati well-known for its high academic standards. Herman Kisasila, the National Director of Safina, and the staff and volunteers of Safina serve more than 600 sponsored children who live in 16 different clusters throughout the country.
