Thailand is located in Southeast Asia. Its name means “Land of the Free,” and it is the only country in the region that was not colonized by Western powers. Thailand’s climate is tropical, and the land is fertile for farming. Many varieties of tropical fruits grow year round, and rice, rubber, and sugar are some of the country’s main exports. There is no official state religion in Thailand even though most of the people, roughly 95%, are Buddhists. About 4% of the people are Muslims, and about 1% are Christians. The capital of Bangkok is, by far, the largest city in Thailand. The country faces challenges from widespread crime, drugs, alcohol, and prostitution, and it has been affected by the AIDS epidemic. Thailand also has issues with homelessness among children and with child labor.
The Children of Promise program in Thailand, called Young Friends, began in 1993. The Young Friends ministry serves children in four different areas of Thailand. Families in these farming communities have a hard time providing for their children when low rainfall or harsh conditions hurt the quality of their crops. Young Friends Program Director, Dow Chanwichaipote, works with the committees in the local churches to help sponsored children receive food, education, and health care. They also make sure the children are discipled and experience the love of Jesus in the community of the church.
