Bangladesh declared its independence from Pakistan on March 26, 1971 when the country, then known as East Pakistan seceded from West Pakistan. This began the Bangladesh Liberation War, which ended on December 16, 1971 officially making East Pakistan the independent country of Bangladesh. Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Bangladesh often experiences devastating floods and cyclones, which cause many deaths and economic hardship for the mostly agricultural economy. More than 90% of the people of Bangladesh practice Islam, with Hinduism being the second most common religion. While Bangladesh’s constitution provides for freedom of religion, Hindus, Christians and Buddhists have faced persecution and violence.

The Children of Promise program in Bangladesh, called Ashirbad (Blessing), began in 2012.  It ministers to the lowest caste of people, considered “The Untouchables.” These families are ostracized from the rest of society and considered “unclean.” They live in separate, isolated villages in small mud huts or wooden structures. Parents work at jobs that involve hard labor and menial tasks that other members of society will not do. Most families earn about $1.00 per day. Ashirbad and the Church of God in Bangladesh are determined to reach out to these families and love them as Jesus would. Program Director Shikha Biswas and volunteers help the sponsored children receive food, education, and health care. They also make sure the children are discipled and experience the love of Jesus in the community of the local church.
